High on the north-western slopes of the Malvern Hills, West Malvern was originally part of Mathon parish in Herefordshire. However, during the villages growth as a health resort in the 19th Century, the chapel of ease of St James (built in the 1840s) was brought into the Malvern district and the Diocese of Worcester. Roget of thesaurus fame is buried in St James churchyard.
