Henry Barton was born in Cromhall, Gloucestershire. On the 1901 Census he was shown as living near Coles Bridge, Cromhall. His trade was given as carpenter, it is therefore no surprise that he enlisted as a wheelwright in the Army Service Corps in Woolwich. His service number indicates that he joined the Special Reserve designed to supplement the trades of the army. On census records his father was shown as a farmer of Townwell Farm, Charfield, Gloucestershire.
His son, Francis Samuel was killed in action during the Battle of Dorian, Salonika.
