Charles Henry Grubb was baptised on 17th February 1889 at Leigh Church; he was the son of Edward Grubb and Elizabeth Mary Preece of Coles Green, Leigh. In 1891 the family were living at Sandlin, Leigh and Thomas Grubb’s occupation is given as farm labourer. By 1901 the family had reutrned to Coles Green, however by 1920 the family lived in Cowleigh Bank, Malvern.
It is not known why Charles Grubb served as Charles Evans during the war. His brother-in-law was Charles Evans, husband of his sister Sarah Ann Grubb, but there is no definite indication why he should serve under an assumed name – he would not have been under age if he enlisted during the Great War.
Two of his cousins were killed in the war – John Thomas of the 1/8th Worcestershire Regiment and Arthur Grubb of the 3rd Worcestershire Regiment.
