William John Walker was born in East Ham, London and was adopted by Mr and Mrs J Waugh of Cowleigh Bank. He was a regular soldier and enlisted in around 1906. At the beginning of the First World War it is likely he was a Reservist and was recalled to the Colours. He was killed whilst on patrol at Helles on Gallipoli

His elder step brother Edward Waugh, a shoeing-smith, died whilst serving with the 11th Hussars in October 1918.
