Henry Barton was born in Cromhall, Gloucestershire. On the 1901 Census he was shown as living near Coles Birdge, Cromhall. His trade was given as carpenter, it is therefore no surprise that he enlisted as a wheelwright in the Army ServicCe orps in Woolwich. His service number indicates that he joined the Special Reserve designed to supplement the trades of the army. His father was shown as a farmer of Townwell Farm, Charfield, Gloucestershire.
His son, Francis Samuel was killed in action during the Battle of Dorian.
