Harry Caines was born in Colwall, the son of Albert and Elizabeth Caines (later of Hill View Terrace, Upper Wyche, Malvern). He enlisted in the Herefordshire Regiment [1] at the beginning of the war and served in the Dardanelles.
The Malvern News reported on the 27th November 1915: “He … was wounded at Gallipoli [2] on 5/9/15 whilst attached to the Machine Gun Corps. A bullet passed through his helmet into his shoulder. He was brought to hospital in Malta, where he went on military police duty. His father and two uncles were in the army and a cousin, Bdr J Freeman, RFA had already served at the front for 14 months by November 1915.”
