The 1901 Census shows the Boswell family living at Knights Farm, Welland. A large family, the census records children Leslie, Blanche, Harry, Gladys, Grace, Lugard, Doris and Hubert – their mother, Blanche was shown as a widow, and given that Hubert was only one year of age this bereavement must have been quite recent.

Lugard Douglas BOSWELL was born in Welland on 21 st October 1895, the son of John and Blanche Boswell of Knights Farm Cottages, Welland. He started Welland school on the 20th March 1899 and enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment in 1915. At the time of joining up, both his parents had passed away (his mother suffered from cancer and died in 1909 aged 46 and his father had died in January 1899 aged 38) and he had lived with his elder sister Blanche in Drake Street, Welland.

Pte Boswell was posted to the 9th Battalion which landed in Gallipoli as part of the Mediteranean Expeditionary Force in June 1915. In the same month he wrote to his sister asking for clean socks. He was killed in action on Gallipoli on 10th August 1915. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
