Joseph Layland was one of the five soldier sons of Mr Frank W Layland of Rose Cottage, Red Lion Bank. His brothers were Reuben, RHA (who served with the Royal Engineers in the Second World War); Charles, Royal Field Artillery; Phillip, a Kitchener recruit; William Royal Field Artillery and James Dovey, Royal Field Artillery his brother-in-law. He died as a prisoner in Döbritz, Germany on 22nd January 1915 of pneumonia.
Frank Layland moved to 3 Shirley Villas, Cowleigh Road in April 1915. The address he gave the Commonwealth War Graves Commission after the war was 1 Ash Cottage, Red Lion Bank.
