The Malvern News reported in June 1917: “News has been received in Birmingham that Pte John Gardiner, Worcestershire Regiment [1] whose home was at 4, Woodland Cottages, West Malvern, and was reported as a Prisoner of War is now reported as having died on the 6th August 1915 or sometime later. He has two other brothers serving in France.”
Born in West Malvern in 1891, Johnny Gardiner was enumerated was living with his widowed mother, sister Charlotte and brother Thomas in Croft Bank, West Malvern in 1901. Some time after this, the family moved to Birmingham.
