The Malvern News reported: “Major H B Spear (the son of Revd T Spear of Malvern) has returned to the front in temporary command of a Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. He was severely wounded in the Second Battle of Ypres, and his right arm is permanently disabled.”

He first went to France in December 1914, making it likely that he served with the 1st or 2nd Battalions.
