Ernest William BAYLISS was born on 16th June 1895. He was the son of William Bayliss, a grocer, of Slate Firs, Drake Street, Welland . He started Welland school on 2nd September 1900. He joined the Queens Own Worcestershire Hussars [1] and embarked with the Regiment on 9th April 1915 at Avonmouth Docks, bound for the Mediterranean. The Regiment landed at Alexandria, Egypt on 24th April 1915 and the majority of the unit served as dismounted troops on Gallipoli [2].
Pte Bayliss was wounded on the 9th January 1917 and was killed in action at the Third Battle of Gaza [3] on the 8th November 1917, aged 22.
