It is not clear why David John Hartwell is commemorated on the Malvern Library Memorial.  He was born at Kersoe, Bricklehampton in 1894, the son of Charles Hartwell, a farm labourer and Eliza his wife.  He is commemorated at Bricklehampton Church, but also appears on the Malvern Library Memorial.  In the 1901 and 1911 Censuses, he is recorded as John.

David John Hartwell joined the Worcestershire Regiment in autumn 1914 and first went overseas with the 1st Battalion in January 1915.  He was later posted to the 11th Battalion and served at Salonika, being killed in action during the Battle of Doiran.
