Biography

John Whittern was born at Chaceley, near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire on 30th September 1896. He was the son of William, an agricultural labourer and Ann (nee Tudor). The surname on his birth certificate was Whithorn but on the 1901 census it appeared as Whittern.

His address is given on the death certificate as Gilper Lodge, Hanley Castle , nr . Worcester and his former occupation was a Carter.

He was in the 8th Battallion , Worcestershire Regiment when he died of measles and broncho pneumonia in the Field Ambulance Hospital , Abingdon Avenue , Northampton on 18th March 1915 aged 19. He is buried in St.James Churchyard, Welland , Worcestershire, by the North Wall.
