The Malvern News reported in June 1917: "News has been received in Birmingham that Pte John Gardiner, Worcestershire Regiment whose home was at 4, Woodland Cottages, West Malvern, and was reported as a Prisoner of War is now reported as having died on the 6/8/15 or sometime later. He has two other brothers serving in France."
In 1901 Johnny Gardiner as he was enumerated was living with his widowed mother, sister Charlotte and brother Thomas in Croft Bank, West Malvern
